Timeline

Background

Timothy (Ty) S. Hogan was born in Cincinnati on July 4, 1983. Of Irish-German descent, Hogan’s Democratic heritage extends over one hundred and nineteen years. Three previous Timothy S. Hogans were distinguished Democratic public servants as the Ohio Attorney General, U.S. District Judge of the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of Ohio, and Clermont County Commissioner.

Growing up in Milford, Hogan attended Summit Country Day for high school. A three-sport athlete, he earned various accolades on the football field and committed to Fordham University in New York. Hogan played tight end and started in his sophomore year on a team that ranked 9th in Division 1-AA. He continued his career as a noteworthy student-athlete, winning Fordham’s Danowski Award as one of the University’s finest leaders. He became the first football player in Fordham’s storied history to earn an accelerated master’s degree in economics while playing his final season.

After Fordham, Hogan started his professional career on Wall Street as an Analyst and Equity Trader at Bank of America. Navigating the global financial crisis, he was trusted to trade billions of dollars in unprecedented times. His performance led to an accelerated promotion at Bank of America and his role as an Associate at Merrill Lynch.

Struggling with the aftermath of the 9/11 attacks, Hogan put his financial career on hold and enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corps. The decision earned him praise from both of Ohio’s U.S. Senators in letters of endorsement:

“I sense his deep desire to serve his country…(his) intellect and numerous accomplishments show his leadership skills, his discipline to any task at hand and his ability to excel under pressure.” – Senator Rob Portman

“Although he has had an impressive and lucrative career in the financial world, Mr. Hogan has decided to pursue a lifelong dream of serving his country as a Marine officer. From being a student-athlete at Fordham to a trader with Bank of America Merrill Lynch, Mr. Hogan has demonstrated his ability to lead.” - Senator Sherrod Brown

After completing Officer Candidate School, Hogan was commissioned as a Second Lieutenant. He served as an Intelligence Officer for Combat Assault Battalion in Okinawa, Japan, before transitioning to reconnaissance. As a Reconnaissance Platoon Commander, Hogan was selected to take on a senior ranking officer’s command and lead an elite special operations capable unit of Marines. In roughly two years, Hogan was deployed to six countries in support of various Marine Corps missions, and his performance led to selection for “career designation,” or being designated as one of the best-qualified officers on active duty.

After two years overseas as a Marine and nearly fifteen years away from home, Hogan chose to end his active-duty career and return to Cincinnati, Ohio. He resumed his career in finance as a Senior Investment and Portfolio Manager at Cincinnati’s largest asset manager, Fort Washington Investment Advisors, a subsidiary of Western & Southern (W&S). Hogan was responsible for managing portfolios and investment strategies for corporations, endowments, and individual investors. In addition to managing assets, Hogan played an active role in W&S's dedicated efforts to make Cincinnati the best place to live, work, and celebrate life.

While establishing himself in the corporate world, Hogan met and married his wife, Laura Schiller. He built from the ground up a multi-million-dollar real estate company throughout Cincinnati. He joined the Board of Directors at Honor Flight Tri-State, Magnified Giving, and the American Endowment Foundation and found a new passion for helping lead impactful non-profits.

Compelled to improve the divisive and toxic nature of today’s political environment, Hogan committed himself to leading change to bridge the growing divisiveness. He applied for and was accepted to Harvard’s Kennedy School of Government. He resigned from his high-paying corporate job, relocated to Boston, and dedicated himself to becoming a public servant.

In Cambridge, Hogan had the opportunity to study public policy with the greatest political minds of our generation. The graduate degree he received allowed him to refocus his expertise in economics, business, and leadership on government. He expanded his network with a diverse range of subject matter experts and friends who could offer guidance on practically any issue.

Following Harvard, Hogan returned to Cincinnati and welcomed his son, Timothy S. Hogan, into the world. He began teaching economics at the University of Cincinnati and once again managed his real estate company, Pendleton Properties.

On December 20, 2023, Hogan transformed an ambition into a reality. He filed his petition for the Ohio State Senate in the 8th District.
